3 Easy Tips to Help Burn Holiday Calories and Green Your Lifestyle-American-Fitness-Couture
If you’re feeling like a stuffed turkey right about now, try these 3 easy tips to help burn off those holiday indulgences, and leave a smaller carbon footprint to boot.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    1. Take the stairs. Climbing stairs is one of the best ways to green your lifestyle and burn a few extra bonus calories during your day. According to a study by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), you’ll burn about .11 calories climbing up each stair, and .05 calories descending each stair or approximately 10 calories per minute. Although elevators do not expend much electricity (approximately 5 kWH per floor), everything DOES add up—or every little bit helps save our planet. For example walking up and down 3 flights of stairs instead of using an elevator, saves 15 kWh a day or 450 kWh per month. That’s enough to power a 37″ Plasma TV for 3 hours. Or if you live in a high rise in a densely populated city, primarily using stairs will save your car the energy equivalent of more than 1 gallon of gasoline per week.                                                                                                                                             2. Park two blocks from work. On average, a 150 pound individual will burn approximately 50 calories per average block for a total of 100 calories. You’ll also save gas, as you’re driving less. Multiply that times 5 days for a total of 1000 calories/week. Multiply this times 48 weeks for a yearly total of 48,000 calories! Figure one pound of fat takes approximately 3500 calories to burn, which means you’ll burn about 12 to 14 pounds per year—simply by walking these two blocks to and from work.

3. Park two blocks from workout studio. On average, a 150 pound individual will burn approximately 50 calories per average block for a total of 100 calories.
